About us

We are STAMPIJ

An Amsterdam based dance club for everyone who moves to rhythm, feels swing in their bones, and loves the rich world we call the Jazz Continuum.

We believe that jazz is not a relic of the past, it is a living, breathing tradition. A continuum of Black American cultural expression, rooted in history and always evolving. Lindy Hop, Solo Jazz and inter-related jazz dances like Slow Jazz or Blues dancing is our heartbeat.

But we don’t stop there!
We explore and experiment across styles that echo the soul of jazz.

What We Stand For

Everyone is equal.
Educators, students, spectators—we learn from each other, regardless of dance level or experience. We believe that vulnerability leads to growth, and that’s what community is all about. We’re committed to listening, learning, and holding space better, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Diversity isn’t a bonus—it’s the heart of jazz.
We strive to welcome and celebrate people of all races, ethnicities, classes (Economic situation), ages, gender identities, sexual orientations, religions (or none), nationalities, bodies, abilities, and dance roles.

We develop personal style
by exploring movement, improvisation (solo and partnered), fluid leader/follower roles, and concepts of individuality in dance.

We organize classes, open practice spaces, and learning opportunities that honor jazz’s roots and push its possibilities.

Oh, and our name?

Stampij is the Dutch word for “herrie maken”, making joyful noise.
Like a stampede on the dance floor.
Like Fletcher Henderson’s “The Stampede.”
Like the way jazz crashes in, unapologetic and alive.

Make noise. Make space. Make it yours.

What is Jazz and Blues dancing?

Lindy Hop

Lindy Hop is a partnered swing dance that grew out of Black communities in Harlem, New York in the early 20th century. It’s playful, expressive, improvisational and always connected to the music.

Lindy Hop is danced mostly to jazz and rhythm & blues music. Although it is a partner dance, solo jazz elements are a big part of the dance.

Solo Jazz

Solo Jazz, also known as Vernacular or Authentic Jazz, is a Black American dance style where individuals improvise steps without a partner. It includes everything from the Charleston to the Cakewalk, Mambo to House.

Though danced solo, it often is a social experience. Dancers connect through shared moves, routines, and jams.

Slow Jazz/Blues

Slow Jazz/Blues is a family of Black American dances danced to jazz or blues music, characterized by improvisation, groundedness, and a strong connection between music and movement.

It’s known for its soulful and expressive movements, often incorporating gentle turns, glides, and dips.
